Green Party's Claudia Roth optimistic

Claudia Roth, German Green Party co-chair

In Baden-Württemberg könnte state elections in March would Greens accept coalition with Christian Democrat Union?

In Baden-Württemberg we are playing to get elected, an election victory.  Our lead candidte Winfried Kretschmann should be the first Green Party Governor, an perhaps in a coalition with the SPD. A black Green coaltion won't work there.

Aren't your plans premature to have the SPD as Junior partner?

If we get more votes, naturally we will elect the Governor.   Then the SPD must be willing to accept a new role

Cameron Middle East visit 'morally obscene' says Green Party's Lucas

Green Party leader Caroline Lucas

David Cameron's recent trip to the Middle East was "morally obscene", Green MP Caroline Lucas has claimed.

The Green Party leader said Mr Cameron had travelled to the region accompanied by a "delegation of arms traders".

Nearly a third of businessmen accompanying the PM on his trip to Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman were from the defence or aerospace industry.

She said that upon first seeing Mr Cameron in Egypt she believed he was there to "express solidarity with the pro-democracy movement".

But she said her view changed when she realised that senior executives from defence companies were amongst those participating in the visit.

She talked of the "horrifying reality that [David Cameron] was there, in the Middle East, at a time of such violence and unrest with a delegation of arms traders to sell more arms".

"The blatant opportunism of this visit is morally obscene," she told party activists.

Green Party joins calls to tackle child poverty

Canada Green Party leader Elizabeth May is the latest politician to back efforts by B.C.'s youth advocate to fight child poverty.

May called Friday for a federal strategy and legislation to tackle the problem.

"It's a scandal that in a wealthy country like Canada we accept the existence of poverty," she said in a press release.

May was responding to a recent report on 21 infant deaths by B.C.'s Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.

The report concluded that B.C.'s high rate of child poverty and patchwork system of support for families put vulnerable children, particularly aboriginal children, at risk of early death.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May and deputy leader and former Habs player Georges Laraque discuss the federal political scene and the possibility of a spring election in Montreal on Feb. 19, 2011.

Green Party supports changing voting system
Green Party leader Caroline Lucas
Caroline Lucas, "Green Party provides "real opposition"
Green Party leader Caroline Lucas has pledged Green Party support for a change in the voting system, saying a switch to the Alternative Vote would be "liberating".

Ms Lucas, who became the party's first MP last year, said moving away from first-past-the-post would "keep MPs on their toes" and curb tactical voting.

The party has long argued for a different, proportional voting system.

Speaking later at the party's Spring conference, she said her party was the "real opposition" to the coalition.

Ireland election Friday - Feb 25, 2011 Green Party re-election chances grow
Darcy Lonergan, 21, Green Party candidate in Cavan-Monaghan

1. Why would any young person want to get into Irish politics at this point in time?

Its vital that the young get into politics as soon as possible as the issues and policies passed by the government has a huge effect on our lives for example education. We can’t trust others to put us first and hear our voices unless we have a voice in the Dáil. Also it is extremely important that young women get into politics. Fifty-one per cent of those who vote are women, yet the highest percentage we have ever reached in national politics is 13.9. This is unacceptable.

2. Why did you choose to run for the Green Party?

I am proud to be a Green Party candidate; the Green Party has displayed all the qualities I would want in my government: honesty, integrity, courage, tenacity and an unflinching persistence to stick to their principles no matter what the consequences. We have made hard, sometimes unpopular, decisions but we made those decisions based on the main core of our existence: to hand over to the next generation a clean environment, filled with natural resources and with respect for the people, animals and flora that inhabit it.

Central Florida Cities Join Together to Save Bullet Train

Officials in Lakeland, Tampa, Orlando form coalition to put project out to bid.

By John Chambliss, THE LEDGER, February 21, 2011

LAKELAND | High-speed rail remains alive, barely.

Supporters in Lakeland, Tampa and Orlando have come together to form a coalition that could put the $2.4 billion project out to bid and ultimately could pick an operator to run the train.

Lakeland commissioners voted, 6-0, on Monday to join the coalition by approving a proposal by City Attorney Tim McCausland.
Now, all they have to do is convince the governor to back it.

And he's shown little sign of giving in.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood set a Friday deadline to devise an alternative plan to create the Orlando-to-Tampa line.

"We would be the Boeing of the Southeast"

U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, who was a key leader in the Florida House 10 years ago in the creation of the High Speed Rail Authority, said the rail line is still on the books in Florida statutes and can be built without taxpayer money.

"I don't understand why the governor didn't go through with requests for proposals to build the high-speed rail so he could see the strong commitment from the private sector in building it," he said. "The reason the three cities are doing this is because they know they can get it done without tax money."

He said the plan from the beginning had been to issue bonds backed by the private developers. Ridership studies, he said, have shown that it will work.

"Not only that, but we would be the first state in the country to build high-speed rail and bring thousands of jobs to the state. We would be the Boeing of the Southeast," he said referring to Boeing Aircraft company, which has brought economic stability to the state of Washington.

Call for local candidates in Virginia

posted by Joe Oddo

Joe Oddo (IG) and Ron Paul

I met several interested individuals at CPAC this past few days. We discussed the difference between running for office (a full-fledged campaign, knocking on every door in the district, maximizing media opportunities, debating the opponents, making public appearances etc.) and standing for office.

Standing for office has value even if you do not get as involved as you can due to job limitations, shortage of time etc. At least the media does ask and usually allows you to publish your positions on your key issues. And you still may have the opportunity to challenge the incumbent. But most important, you may be the only alternative on the ballot. No one should be the only name on the General Election ballot. Unfortunately 35 - 67% of the time there was only one name on the ballot - not what the framers had in mind for a vibrant republic.

So beside the 140 General Assembly seats in 2011, there are numerous others that with more effort than money can get you elected: including Board of Supervisor races in 95 counties; School Boards in 87 counties; Soil and Water Directors, and more.

Please consider the value of being a candidate. Any questions, doubts, suggestions or ideas, contact me anytime. I've been on the ballot. I've made all the mistakes and can help you navigate through a positive experience.

Joe Oddo is the principal of Political Solutions Action Network a political campaign management firm based in Central Virginia.
